2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe

An Interesting Package

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe is almost like two vehicles in one. It has the styling of traditional two-door coupes with the tall, high-riding body of an SUV. Based on the well-received GLC-Class SUV and slotting below the larger GLE Coupe in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, the GLC Coupe aims to make owning a highly stylized car less of an inconvenience.

Performance

The GLC Coupe adds sporty styling to the solid platform of the conventional Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, a small SUV that debuted last year as the replacement for the GLK-Class. Luckily, the GLC Coupe has the performance to back up its more extroverted looks, with two available models to choose from.

The base GLC 300 4MATIC® uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which produces 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Both GLC Coupe variants come with a nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC® all-wheel drive as standard equipment. The GLC 300 gets an EPA-rated 24 mpg combined (22 mpg city, 27 mpg highway).*

For buyers who want a bit more excitement, Mercedes-Benz also offers an AMG® GLC 43 4MATIC® model tuned by its AMG® performance division. This version gets a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that produces an impressive 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. The AMG® GLC 43 also gets AMG®-tuned versions of the nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC® all-wheel drive system used in the GLC 300.

It may be an SUV, but the AMG® GLC 43 is quick enough to rival some sports cars. Mercedes-Benz claims it will do 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 130 mph. This version of the GLC Coupe also gets an EPA-rated 20 mpg combined (18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway).*

Features

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe is a five-door, five-seat SUV. Mercedes-Benz may call it a coupe, but it only really differs from the standard GLC-Class by having a lower roofline. Pricing starts at $45,950.**

Standard features include 19-inch wheels, a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, power sunroof, 14-way power driver’s seat with memory, dual-zone automatic climate control, 40/20/40 split-folding rear bench seat, power liftgate, push-button start, 7-inch central display screen, Bluetooth® streaming audio, HD Radio™, and dual USB ports.

Optional features include adaptive air suspension, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, leather upholstery, rear-window sunshades, navigation, head-up display, Burmester® surround-sound system, voice control, and SiriusXM® satellite radio.

Buyers can also upgrade from the GLC 300 to the AMG® GLC 43 model, which adds the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6; AMG® tuned transmission and all-wheel-drive system; and model-specific styling elements like 20-inch wheels, a sport steering wheel, and brushed aluminum pedals.

Design

The standout element of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe is its design. The GLC is the latest in a line of SUV coupes that includes the larger Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe. These vehicles combine the interior space, tall riding position, and all-wheel drive of traditional SUVs, but without the boxy shapes.

That’s certainly the case with the GLC Coupe. The high beltline and massive wheel arches give the vehicle an aggressive and muscular look, while the low roofline ties it to more traditional coupes. The front end features a headlight and grille design similar to that used on other Mercedes-Benz models, while the rear-end styling calls to mind the Mercedes S-Class and C-Class coupes.

The interior features the same level of quality in its design and materials as other recent Mercedes-Benz models. The curved center console topped with three large air vents looks stylish and puts controls within easy reach. A display screen for the infotainment system is placed atop the center console, closer to the driver’s line of sight.

While it sacrifices some practicality in the name of style, the GLC Coupe still offers the utility of an SUV. Unlike conventional coupes, it has full-size rear doors and rear seats, offering 37.3 inches of rear legroom. It also boasts a generous 56.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the rear seats folded.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, ATTENTION ASSIST®, rearview camera, rain-sensing wipers, and seven airbags. Optional features include DISTRONIC PLUS® with steering assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Speed Limit Assist, and PARKTRONIC® with Active Parking Assist.

Verdict

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe blends eclectic categories into a one-of-a-kind package.
