New Mercedes-Benz G-Class Remains Unapologetically Boxy

The next Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV promises to be new in almost every way. Expect it to be wider. Expect it to be lighter with modernized steering and suspension systems. Just don’t expect the boxy shape to change.
Gorden Wagener, Daimler AG Chief Design Officer, has confirmed that the G-Class is undergoing a thorough redesign. Every visible part is new in both the interior and exterior, he said, with the exception of a small plastic lip on the C-pillar.
“We did everything new,” Wagner told Automotive News at the New York Auto Show.
Everything but the shape. The iconic SUV that debuted in 1979 is revered by many, so any redesign has to be handled delicately and respectfully.
"You have to keep it boxy," said Wagener. "You have to treat it very responsible, otherwise it wouldn't be a G. So it still has to be edgy." However, he did say that the proportions have been improved for a more mature take on the previous design.
Other details are scarce. Insiders have reported that the new model will retain its body on frame chassis with a live rear axle. The redesigned interior will feature the updated Mercedes-Benz infotainment system.
Wagener didn’t say when the redesigned G-Class would be unveiled, other than to say that it would be in the “not too distant future.” That means there’s a good chance we’ll see the new model at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September.
