Fuel-Saving Features from Mercedes-Benz

With fuel prices projected to remain high through Memorial Day, everyone has become more attuned to their vehicle’s fuel economy. Mercedes-Benz has engineered the models in its lineup to offer outstanding fuel-saving features. From hybrid powertrains to aerodynamic designs, Mercedes-Benz keeps the environment—and your wallet—in mind.
Variable Valve Timing
Mercedes-Benz’s variable valve timing technology is used in many engine options to increase performance as well as fuel economy and efficiency. It works by altering the timing of the valves by shifting the phase angle of the camshaft. If that sounds like a bunch of jargon you don’t really care about, just know that VVT equals better efficiency. This technology is used throughout the Mercedes-Benz lineup on most models.
Turbo Powertrains
Much like how variable valve timing can improve efficiency, so can turbochargers. The application of turbochargers may have started with the desire for faster vehicles, but it has an extra benefit. By using a turbocharger, Mercedes-Benz can use a smaller engine with less horsepower without creating a vehicle that feels sluggish. Small turbos provide the power you need to merge onto highways or pass another car but don’t drink up fuel when you’re driving normally. A great example is the CLA equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. With 221 horsepower, you might expect this car to be expensive at the pump but the premium sedan still achieves 36 mpg on the highway.*
Hybrid & Electric Performance
It's hard to beat an electrified powertrain when it comes to efficiency. Mercedes-Benz has been using high-performance hybrid powertrains in everything from race cars to consumer vehicles for many years. This year the automaker has taken that even further by introducing the Mercedes-Benz EQ lineup. This highly-anticipated lineup of fully-electric models will include; the EQS, a stunning luxury sedan; the EQB, a rugged all-terrain SUV; and the EQE, a mid-size sedan built for commuting.
